About Athena Vineyards & Winery
Located on the Great Wicomico River, elegance characterizes Athena Vineyards' wines and setting. Our winery was featured as Cruise-of-the-Month in the April 2008 issue of Chesapeake Bay Magazine and voted as Virginia's favorite winery in 2008 by the FA Farm Wineries Council competition. Our first winemaker, Jacques Recht, won the American Wine Society's coveted "Person of Merit" award in 2007 for his winemaking skills and contributions to the wine industry. Whether you arrive by car, motorcycle or boat, we welcome your visit!

Chardonnay

Nightingale Chardonnay This stainless steel fermented Chardonnay retains the grape's original crispness and preserves its fruit and flowery aromas. It pairs well with Chesapeake Bay oysters and crab, with shrimp salad and Caesar salad and with fowl. Alcohol content 13% by volume.

2007 This prestigious wine fermented in French oak barrels is typical of the Burgundy region. It is a dry white wine with tones of citrus underlying a buttery taste. Ideal wine as a drink and with seafood, French and Northern Italian foods. Alcohol content 13% by volume.

Athena's Lighthouse White This light, aromatic wine is made with Seyval Blanc and other white wine grapes. Its tartness is balanced with residual sugar, making it a good wine for sipping or paired with seafood and white meats. Alcohol content 12.5% by volume. Available in a cobalt blue Lighthouse shaped bottle.

Athena's Sweet White Late harvest white blend with a mellow taste. Goes well with dessert and is especially good with chocolate. Alcohol content 14% by volume.

Athena's White We designed this crisp wine for typical Chesapeake Bay seafood. You will enjoy the fruity aromas and delicate taste of this blend of Vidal Blanc and Seyval Blanc grapes.

Cabernet Franc

This light red wine aged in French oak is one of the classic red wines of the Loire Valley. It goes well with beef, pork, lamb, poultry and game, and is especially good with spicy dishes. Alcohol content 13% by volume.

Cabernet Sauvignon

2006 Produced using traditional French Bordeaux wine making techniques and aged in French oak barrels. This wine is the aristocrat of the red wines, with a peppery bouquet. Goes well with red meat or game and is ideal with duck. Alcohol content 13% by volume.

Chambourcin

Nightingale Red Made with Chambourcin grapes, this semi-dry, aromatic wine goes well with seafood, beef, lamb, pork, game, pasta and spicy foods. Alcohol content 12.5% by volume.

Meritage Blends

Meritage 06 Meritage (pronounced like "heritage") was named by a group of American vintners to identify hand-crafted wines blended from the traditional "noble" Bordeaux varietals. Athena's 06 Meritage was made with a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 15% Petit Verdot. The blend was aged in new French oak barrels from the forests of central France. The 12.7% alcohol content was chosen to preserve the elegance of this wine. The mellowness and soft tannins with hints of vanilla and chocolate make Athena's Meritage a perfect match for beef and game meats.

Galleon Treasure Red This wine is a hearty and full aromatic dry red wine - a distinctive blend of our Nightingale Red and Cabernet Franc. It goes will with grilled meats and barbecues. Alcohol content 12.5% by volume.

Sweet Notes The balanced blend of sweet red wine is delicious served chilled. Nuances of raspberry, blackberry and blueberry flow through from aromatics to the palate. Pairs well with curries and sweet desserts. Alcohol 12.5% by volume. Available in a Guitar shaped bottle.

Mellow Notes This is a fortified Vignoles wine vented as in Portugal and comes in a distinctive Saxophone shape bottle. It has clean crisp flavors of pear, sweet orange rind, almond and vanilla that cascade onto the palate. Serve slightly chilled as an aperitif or with cantaloupe and fruits as a dessert. Alcohol content 18% by volume.

Safe Harbor 18% alcohol red wine made in the Portuguese style. Safe Harbor is a fortified Chambourcin wine vinted as in Portugal, but with a shorter barrel aging. The richness of the wine is complemented by blue cheese, nuts, dark chocolate, dried fruit, and especially by English Stilton cheese. This distinctive bottle is a type of caravel, a ship with two or three masts used by Europeans beginning in the 15th Century for long exploratory voyages. Caravels were used to bring the first English settlers to Jamestown, Virginia in 1607.
