AmRhein's 2017 Aglianico

This medium bodied red wine features bright flavors of cherries and smooth tannins from aging in French oak.

VINTAGE NOTES

An old-world grape originally cultivated by the ancient Greeks and later adopted by the Romans. It is now mostly grown in southern Italy where it is considered one of the three greatest Italian varieties. We are one of only two producers of this grape in the state of Virginia bringing you a truly unique wine. It won a Silver Medal in the 2019 Virginia Governor’s Cup.

VITICULTURE & VINEYARD SITE

Grown at our Franklin County Vineyard on the shoulder of Cahas Mountain. The south facing vineyard lies at 1700 feet elevation. Red clay soil and granite rock make this vineyard a superb producer of high-quality
grapes.

WINEMAKING

Aglianico produces heavy clusters of large black grapes. We destemmed the clusters and cold soaked the grapes for 3 days prior to the onset of fermentation. The wine was fermented on the skins (macerated) for 21 days and then pressed to a stainless-steel tank for the next 3 months. It was then racked to neutral oak barrels for aging.

TASTING NOTES & FOOD PAIRING

This Aglianico was made in a light Italian style with a bright acidity. Cherry notes dominate the nose and continue on the pallet. Soft tannins with light spice featuring pepper and cloves round out the finish. This wine pairs beautifully with anything with a tomato sauce base as the two flavors awaken and enhance one another. Enjoy it with pasta with bolognaise sauce, lasagna, or your favorite pizza. In the warmer months, enjoy this Aglianico chilled.

All AmRhein's wines are made from 100% estate grown grapes cultivated in our three vineyard locations in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia since 1995.
