The 22nd Annual Town Point Virginia Wine Competition was held on Friday, October 11, 2013, at the Town Point Club in downtown Norfolk under the direction of Dr. Roy L. Williams. Twenty-eight Virginia wineries submitted wines to this year’s competition which was judged by thirteen judges including local chefs, wine writers, wine consultants and members of the wine industry.

The Virginia Wine Board is seeking qualified applicants to submit a proposal to produce a Commercial Grape Report.

The Virginia Wine Board is seeking qualified applicants to submit a proposal to: Provide enology extension services to Virginia wineries The qualified candidate will possess strong knowledge of all phases of winemaking, including but not limited to, fermentation kinetics, wine microbiology, wine chemistry, wine stability, sanitation, cellar safety and food safety. This position requires extensive travel within the state, including some overnight travel. In addition to visiting wineries, the applicant will conduct 4 regional wine making workshops (1 per quarter) in different areas within the state to provide wine making education and address wine making issues, as identified by winemakers. There are no research requirements, but a quarterly report will be due to the Wine Board 1 week prior to Board meetings and be available to attend Wine Board meetings if needed.

The Virginia Wine Board is seeking qualified applicants to submit a proposal to: Organize industry led research initiatives which address the enology and viticultural issues impacting the Commonwealth of Virginia. The projects should focus on vineyard and winery techniques specific to Virginia, ideally led by local wineries and winemakers. The project should focus on potential enology techniques for improving Virginia wines. The successful applicant is encouraged to utilize and partner with established Wine Trails (vineyard operators and wine makers) within their American Viticulture Areas (AVA).

“Create a work force development program to train candidates for entry level wine production and/or vineyard jobs” The successful proposal will develop a curriculum and train students utilizing existing industry talent including local vineyard owners/operators, winemakers, consultants, and others qualified to teach and train the necessary skills. This is a “hands on” class that will involve on site teaching/work at area vineyards and wineries during the time just prior to harvest until post-harvest. The proposal should include certificate to students who complete the training.
