Walsh Family Wine Russ Mountain Merlot

Russ Mountain Vineyard is located along the Blue Ridge Mountain Range, two miles south of Bluemont, Virginia. Southeast facing, with a granite-based, very shallow soil and 5-9% slopes, this vineyard has proven itself to be home to some of the most expressive red fruit in our program. Planted in 2007 by Mitch and Betsy Russ, Walsh Family Wine took over management in 2017. We produce a single vineyard Merlot from this site.    

Russ Mountain produces what we would refer to as “mountain fruit” qualities in the wine – a brambly, spicey, very open and pronounced aromatic intensity followed by a dense and vibrant mid-palate. Our goal each year is simply to situate the canopy and vine health to hopefully promote the fullest ripeness the vintage will allow, so as to present Russ Mountain in its most expressive state. As a rule we do not allow ourselves to blend any more than 5% of another varietal into the Russ Mountain bottlings
